Hello!
Welcome to this virtual space, and thank you for being here. Ever since I have had conscious thoughts in my brain, I’ve known an affinity and deep reverence for, and a calling to be in and learn about, nature. So naturally, I became an actor.
My theater training was interdisciplinary and concentrated on creating original work. As a multi-cultural, bilingual person with more than one passion, that approach aligned with how I was finding my way in the world. Creating original work is still one of my favorite things to do, and its practice informs my lifestyle as well as how I continue to learn and grow artistically.
In all this time, my love of science and my need to be in nature in order to feel like my whole self has never once waned. Neither has my love of stories. Nor my respect and admiration for the power of stories. So I've always grappled with how best to weave my varied interests into something that will create connection—not only between people, but between people and the world around us—and actively help heal the planet. And, in the way of evolution, I must constantly remind myself that there isn't a set arrival point, but endless adaptations that may or may not last.
In this season of my life, one of those adaptations is finally budding into a conservationist and naturalist in a more structured sense. (Please, please, please talk ecology to me!) Another is to give free rein to my many interests and areas of learning and practice without dictating how this should look in my life and career. This ranges from my journey in solo motherhood to my work as an NYC Parks Super Steward to artist finances. My wish is that my work help dissolve this narrative that there is us and there is nature. We are nature. I wish that my work can help fill the gap between scientific data and actual change. To make stewardship and respect for Earth and all its inhabitants the mainstream narrative, the cool thing to do, the obvious thing to do, the only thing we do.
It is my earnest hope that this virtual space can be a launching pad to sharing actual space, to being in communion and community, which have become radical in this time. But also, being in community is vital and just fun. Whether that's to get our hands in dirt or to create something (hopefully both!).
With love,
Inés
